Trying to see the good I can these days

There's a HS kid here in GA who was told he couldn't run for Prom King because he's trans. There's petitions going both ways, he's told the press he's going no matter what.
Small silver lining: I'm in Atlanta. Heard about this story during my drive on the local talk radio channel (same place that hosts Rush, Hannity, et al).
The news team didn't point out they were doing it, but they refused to misgender this kid. Every single pronoun used was male.
Yeah, it's their news team. They normally do straight AP wire, local weather and traffic, but if a conservative leaning talk radio channel in North Georgia of all places can do that, maybe we're not as bad off as we think?
(I know I'm giving praise for doing what they should be doing anyway, but I considered the circumstances worthy of note.)

There's the Mid-March moodiness

Star Trek called them parallel universes. Terry Pratchett called them the trousers of time. It's still bizarre, knowing that in the next universe over, I've been dead for ten years as of tomorrow morning.
March 22, 2009, was pretty packed. Faced and defeated someone I respected, if not downright admired (I've never seen fire control like that before or since). The reaper shimmied closer to me than she ever has. Took care of business in ways that looked good on paper. And not long afterwards, I watched from a distance as a friend became a legend.
All that before lunch.
Sometimes, it's felt like I've been living in a bonus round ever since.
Sometimes, it's "This is what I've accomplished in the meantime? Really? Unfuck yourself, mate."
Given that there's still some younger men in similar uniforms tromping around the place, it's given a tempered lens to both history and current affairs.
On the whole, I'm grateful. I've not only been granted a longer life, but one I know about and can appreciate. And as long as I still got it, I'll keep making it a good one and enjoying it.

Well, that was a pleasant surprise.

I'm a somewhat-trained baritone. It's just something I've never had to professionally use. If I'd gone the opera route, that would be one thing. But I'm the size of any three members of a normal chorus line and a baritone, which means in musical theater terms, I'm fucking useless until I hit my forties.
I went down a couple decibels during the war. Two IED's, a mortar, some small arms fire and some miscellany gave me some moderately jacked up ears. Took me until 2013 before I could use a phone without shouting and/or asking people to repeat themselves embarrassingly often. Yay texting.
(Yes, I went to the VA. Yes, they were useless. Yes, I know about the 3M lawsuit. No, I don't care enough to bother with it. Moving on.)
Since then I've been equally curious and nervous, wondering if I lost my musical ear along with the range.
Welp, tonight I went out to karaoke with those most wondrous of people: loved ones I trust to tell me if and when I'm fucking up.
And, near as I can tell, still got it. Needed neither bucket nor forklift to carry tunes. Kept up with both Elvis and Meatloaf before calling it a night to go home and feed the cats.
Nice to know that tool's still useful, if I ever need it out of the box again.

Which led to checking the website for the first time in forever. And hey, even it says I'm sag eligible now.
(I've technically been eligible since mid-2015. But since I didn't book a gig where it mattered for another three years, I wasn't exactly holding my breath about it.)
So that's cool. I'm not a sign-waving "go union" kinda guy. To be honest, I'm not all that impressed with sag right now, given the Hoffman case.
But that said, it's pretty much universally acknowledged as a professional milestone in my industry. One I worked my ass off to earn. So I'll treat it as such.

I'm not surprised.

On the top ten list of what most people would drop their principles like a used condom and lie, cheat, steal, and kill for, "My kids" would invariably top that list time and again.
Two, we're living in a world where every day we discover another way where the system is rigged. "Rig it right back" is rapidly moving from a third option to the first and most preferred.
I am surprised that this many at this level got caught, let alone all at once. As much as we're becoming polarized, the old political protections are breaking down as well, where being exposed in the latest sin gets you thrown to the wolves.
But I've been an advocate of bulldozing the ivory tower to make pianos for years now, what do i know?
